Photocard Driving Licences – Check the Expiry Date

The photocard driving licence system is now just over 10 years old, having replaced the paper licence.

Many people are not aware that their photocard licences are only valid for 10 years since generally people have a licence to drive until the age of 70 as is also shown on the licence. If you have one of these licences, do check the section shown at 4b on the front of the photocard.

This is the date your photocard licence actually expires. The DVLA require an updated photo every 10 years (except in certain circumstances) and you should receive a renewal pack 2 months before your licence is due to expire. If you do not you can obtain a pack from the DVLA or the Post Office (D1 Application for a Driving Licence). The current cost of renewal is £17.50.

The penalty for driving without a valid Driving Licence is a fine of up to £1,000, a possible ban and 3 to 6 points.
