What is Best for the Children?

There are so many different reports around commenting on what is good or bad parenting; it can be confusing trying to determine what is best for your child. A recent report identifies a number of parenting styles such as “tough love” or “laissez-faire”. Apparently the tough love style is supposed to be the best in terms of children’s outcomes, but quite how all this is measured can often be very difficult to fathom.

If you are divorcing or separating from the other parent of your children then these reports can often paint a gloomy picture, but it need not be that way. It is important to think very carefully how you are both going to continue to provide the best parenting you can for your children.

Tips for Christmas include planning ahead with your ex to avoid conflict and not getting into the war of presents: for further examples see the Resolution website (www.resolution.org.uk) which not only has an advice section about “Parenting after parting”, but also links to other sources of advice. Resolution is a national organisation of approximately 5000 family lawyers who believe in encouraging couples to try and deal with the issues arising from their relationship breakdown in a way that is constructive and non-confrontational”
