Estate Administration

When someone close to you dies, you need to know what to do.

There are practical steps which must be taken straightaway.

If you live a long way away, we can take these preliminary steps for you.

We can also deal with the property and money (“the estate”).

Some estates can be handled quite easily. If you have a thorough knowledge of the estate, if the assets are few in number and of modest value, if you or those close to you are entitled to the estate (and they are adults) and if the terms of the will are straightforward, you may not need legal help.

In many cases, however, the work is not straightforward. There are many hidden pitfalls and liabilities. Whoever administers an estate takes on a personal responsibility and liability not only to those entitled to the property and money but also to HM Revenue & Customs. Unless you are a professional trustee, the work is unpaid. If in doubt, it is safer to get expert help.
