What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

Illness, accident, old age. These are the circumstances in which it may become impossible for you to manage your money, pay bills or to make personal decisions.

Even a husband and wife have no legal authority to manage each other’s financial affairs and a joint account may be frozen if one account holder becomes incapacitated.

A Lasting Power of Attorney gives one or more persons of your choice (your Attorney(s)) the power to manage your property and money if you are unable to do so.

At the same time, you can delegate decisions affecting your personal welfare including health care and medical treatment decisions.

It is only possible to give a Lasting Power of Attorney to another person when you are of sound mind, so consider it now.
